Job Description:

+ Position Summary

+ Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through the diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

+ Position Responsibilities

+ Unit Specific Position Responsibilities

+ Performs according to ASPAN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.

+ Conisders age, growth, and development of the patient when planning, teaching, and providing care (pediatric through geriatric populations).

+ Applies educational teaching/learning concepts to the surgical patient and their family.

+ Provides nursing care to the PACU patient emerging from anesthesia.

+ Follows and maintains radiation safety standards as outlined in radiation safety manual.

+ Maintain aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.

+ Ability to provide comfort, support, and pain control for perioperative patients.

+ Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

+ Assists surgeons and anesthesiologists with procedures and assists other personnel as needed to ensure appropriate patient care.

+ Has the ability to transport patients safely.

+ Functions as a leader to team members when delegating/supervising aspects of care.

+ Cross trains as needed in other functions of surgical services.

+ Provides education/orientation/mentoring to new staff, students, and other hospital employees.

+ Performs and maintains orientation and position competency checklists and skills validation.

+ Performs other duties as assigned and/or cross-trains as needed to other functions/roles of surgical services.

+ Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

+ Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

+ Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.

+ Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.

+ Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

+ Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

+ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

+ Organizational Requirements:

+ Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

+ Preferred Qualifications:

+ Baccalaureate degree in nursing.

+ Professional certification in nursing specialty.

+ Knowledgeable in ASPAN Perianesthesia Nursing Standards and Recommended Practices.

+ Obtain certification in clinical area – CAPA or CPAN.

+ Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

+ Proficient in communication skills.

+ Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.

+ Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with diverse population groups.

+ Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.

+ Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.

+ Ability to read and understand chart documentation.

+ Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.

+ Ability to read, write and understand the English language.

+ Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

+ Two years of critical care experience.
