Ames, Iowa, a college town in the heart of the Midwest, is shaped by the presence of Iowa State University and a strong connection between education, innovation, and community life. Known for its engineering programs and research initiatives, Ames blends academic influence with small-town accessibility, creating a place where ideas are constantly being tested, shared, and brought into the real world.
John McGivern explores how Ames extends far beyond the classroom through hands-on experiences and community-driven spaces. From an engineering campus where products are tested and students gain real-world experience, to a butterfly conservatory that offers a controlled tropical environment filled with hundreds of species, the city highlights the intersection of science, learning, and discovery. Historic murals by Grant Wood also reflect the values that helped shape the university, capturing themes of hard work, education, and progress.
At the same time, Ames is grounded in its people and local culture. Downtown businesses and interactive spaces, like cooking classes designed to bring people together, show how the city prioritizes connection and creativity. Whether through education, entrepreneurship, or shared experiences, Ames continues to evolve while maintaining a strong sense of identity rooted in community, opportunity, and growth.
In October 2024, Patrice and Kevin McCabe, visited Ames with their production crew to record an episode for RV There Yet?, the popular show on Discovery. That Ames / Boone County episode premiered nationally in April 2025.
The episode covers the two-county region and highlights include camping at Ledges State Park, biking on the High Trestle Trail, the Rail Explorers experience in Boone, butterflies at Reiman Gardens, shopping in Downtown Ames, and tailgating at Jack Trice Stadium with Cornbred and the Iowa State University Marching Band.
The Ames Regional Economic Alliance was excited to spearhead this project in collaboration with Discover Ames, Visit Boone County, and the RV There Yet? team.
