Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT), Systems Planning Bureau, is accepting applications for summer jobs as video manual traffic counter, traffic recorder operator, and communication shop worker. Additionally, the Modal Transportation Bureau is seeking rail inventory workers to visit each railroad crossing to take measurements and photos, collect data concerning railroad crossing attributes, and enter the information on a tablet. Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of employment and available from May 18 through mid-August 2026. These positions require a valid driver’s license as some will travel statewide and stay overnight from Sunday afternoons through Friday mornings. Note, some of the video manual traffic counter positions work in an office setting in Ames, which allows for a few positions to be filled with 16 and 17 year-old applicants as well as those who may not have a driver’s license. Several positions may start in early April.

These positions pay $17.60 per hour, with additional pay available for recorder operators. Employees working outside of the office are reimbursed for eligible expenses incurred for lodging and food; vehicles are supplied by the Iowa DOT.

Position Descriptions:

  • VIDEO MANUAL TRAFFIC COUNTER: These non-travel office positions count traffic on video collected by Miovision cameras and also verify automatic traffic recorder data collection. These positions are Monday through Friday and are Ames office-based positions. In addition to applicants 18 and above, these positions are open for 16 and 17 year-old applicants as well those who may not have a driver’s license.
  • TRAFFIC RECORDER OPERATOR: These positions travel to defined locations to set video traffic collectors or portable traffic recorders with pneumatic tubes, draw recorder location site maps, and download traffic data after a predetermined count time. This requires working in all areas within the road right-of-way, near traffic, and in all weather conditions. Vehicles are provided during the work week. A significant portion of the work will be in the southeast quadrant of Iowa. Statewide, overnight travel from Sunday afternoons through Friday mornings is required.
  • COMMUNICATION SHOP ASSISTANT: These positions assist communications staff with installing and maintaining permanent automatic traffic recorder equipment in the right of way and embedded in the pavement at continuous count stations (CCS). These CCS use electronic equipment to collect vehicle count, classification, speed, and weight data. Applicant should have basic knowledge of construction tools and methods. Statewide, overnight travel required Monday through Thursday. Residence in the Ames area is beneficial when weather limits the ability to work and travel.
