Position: Choir Director (Part-Time)
Compensation: $60 per Rehearsal (see below under “Compensation”)
Church: First Christian Church, 611 Clark Ave, Ames, IA 50010
Reports to: Pastor and Worship Planning Team
Position Summary
We are seeking a part-time Choir Director to lead a volunteer choir that enriches worship in a progressive Disciples of Christ church. The Choir Director will prepare and lead music for worship twice per month, fostering a welcoming, encouraging environment for singers of varying experience levels.
Primary Responsibilities
- Select and prepare appropriate choral music in collaboration with the pastor and worship planners
- Lead and direct once-a-week rehearsals in preparation for worship (currently on Sunday morning)
- Direct the choir during worship services on scheduled Sundays (two per month – September through May)
- Support inclusive, justice-centered, and theologically progressive worship through music
- Encourage participation, growth, and confidence among volunteer singers
Qualifications
- Experience directing choirs or vocal ensembles
- Ability to teach music effectively to singers with a range of musical skills
- Familiarity with church or worship music preferred
- Comfort working in a progressive, inclusive faith community
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit
Schedule & Time Commitment
- Two Sunday worship services per month, September through May, when choir sings in worship
- Rehearsals, typically one per week September through May excluding Christmas break
- Additional services with additional compensation by mutual agreement
Compensation
- $60 per rehearsal – pay covers when the choir sings in worship up to two times per month, paid monthly
- Compensation for additional rehearsals and services as mutually agreed upon
- Either party may terminate the terms of this agreement with a two-week notice.
