Mitchell Elementary is seeking an Elementary School Counselor for the 2026-27 school year.
Summary
Under the direction of the Principal, the School Counselor works with students to support students’ academic, career, and personal/social development. Individual support and small groups are provided on an as-needed basis. Additional supports include but are not limited to: building relationships, responding to student needs throughout the day, collaborating with staff and parents to best support a student, and distributing items to students in-need. This role requires a proactive individual committed to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
+ Provides short-term individual counseling, small group counseling, and responsive services, including crisis intervention, aligned with multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).
+ Provides responsive services for mental health needs, including crisis intervention and short-term support, while collaborating with families, school staff, and mental health providers to ensure students receive comprehensive, ongoing care.
+ Maintains confidentiality and adheres to professional ethical standards in all interactions.
+ Collaborates with school administration, teachers, families, and community stakeholders to provide referrals and ensure comprehensive support for students.
+ Engages in PLC (Professional Learning Community) work with colleagues to enhance professional practice, share strategies, and improve counseling program outcomes.
+ Participates in school leadership teams, contributing to school-wide initiatives, equity efforts, and decision-making processes.
+ Collects, analyzes, and uses data to evaluate program effectiveness, drive improvements, and demonstrate accountability.
+ Remains readily available to students to provide support that will lead to increased personal growth, self-understand and maturity.
+ Available for special assignments.
+ Attends school and District meetings. Shares the responsibility of interpreting the educational program to the community through such activities as open house, back-to-school night, and PTO meetings.
+ Seeks to improve competency by participating in personal and professional growth activities in conjunction with building and District goals.
+ Participates cooperatively with the building Principal to develop a system by which they will be evaluated in conformance with the District’s guidelines for evaluations and assessment.
+ Demonstrates flexibility, high levels of motivation and enthusiasm when working with all learners.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
+ Valid School Counselor license through the State of Iowa (https://educate.iowa.gov/educator-licensure/applyrenewconvert/professional-school-counseling-license-options)
The successful candidate will exhibit:
+ Understanding of the ASCA National Model and its components.
+ Knowledge of how to design, implement and evaluate a data-driven counseling program.
+ Understanding of evidence-based practices for addressing mental health needs, academic challenges and social-emotional development.
+ Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
+ Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
+ Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
+ Short-term and small-group counseling techniques for all students.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with students, families, school staff, and community stakeholders.
+ Capacity to contribute to school leadership teams, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and district-wide initiatives.
+ Competence in crisis intervention, de-escalation strategies, and supporting students in distress.
+ Ability to balance multiple responsibilities, including direct services, program management, collaboration, and professional development.
+ Ability to organize and coordinate work.
+ Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
+ Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
+ Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
+ Ability to create a sense of belonging and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and families.
