Ames CSD is seeking an Elementary Music Teacher for the 2026-27 school year.

Summary

An Elementary Music Teacher provides standards-based music instruction to students in grades K-5. This position plans and delivers engaging lessons in vocal and instrumental music, prepares students for performances, and collaborates with staff to support the overall educational program. This position travels to multiple elementary buildings.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

+ Creates engaging lesson plans that fosters a love for music for kindergarten through 5th grade students.

+ Teaches music in an all encompassing way to include vocal development, instrumental skills and music appreciation.

+ Differentiates music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.

+ Plans for and leads 4th and 5th grade chorus.

+ Organizes school concerts and facilitates community performances.

+ Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.

+ Relies upon a solid foundation of music pedagogy.

+ Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students.

+ Maintains care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment.

+ Follows the system of student evaluation within guidelines prescribed by the District.

+ Maintains a positive working relationship with building and District staff.

+ Follows and abides by District policies.

+ Collaborates with colleagues in assigned buildings and across the district for alignment purposes.

+ Attends school and District meetings.

+ Performs supervision as needed.

+ Seeks to improve competency by participating in personal and professional growth activities in conjunction with building and District goals.

+ Participates cooperatively with the building Principal to develop a system by which they will be evaluated in conformance with the District’s guidelines for evaluations and assessment.

+ Assumes the responsibility for effective written lesson plans for self and substitutes.

+ Plans and coordinates the work of aides and other educational assistants and student teachers (when applicable).

Qualifications:

+ Valid Iowa teaching license required.

+ Bachelor’s in music education required.

+ K-8 Music endorsement required.

The successful candidate will exhibit:

+ Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.

+ Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.

+ Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

+ Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

+ Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

+ Ability to organize and coordinate work.

+ Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

+ Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

+ Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
